Yavapai County is located in the center of the U.S. state of Arizona. As of 2000 its population was 167,517. The county seat is Prescott.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 21,051 km˛ (8,128 mi˛). 21,039 km˛ (8,123 mi˛) of it is land and 12 km˛ (4 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.06% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 167,517 people, 70,171 households, and 46,733 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km˛ (21/mi˛). There are 81,730 housing units at an average density of 4/km˛ (10/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 91.89% White, 0.39% Black or African American, 1.60% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 3.58% from other races, and 1.95% from two or more races. 9.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 70,171 households out of which 23.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.00% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.40% are non-families. 26.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.10% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 22.40% from 25 to 44, 27.40% from 45 to 64, and 22.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 96.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,901, and the median income for a family is $40,910. Males have a median income of $30,738 versus $22,114 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,727. 11.90% of the population and 7.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.90% are under the age of 18 and 6.70% are 65 or older.

Attractions

Yavapai County is home to Arcosanti, a prototype arcology, developed by Paolo Soleri, and under construction since 1970. Arcosanti is open Moday thru Sunday from 9:00 til 5:00, and holds tours from 10:00 til 4:00 on the hour, every hour. Arcosanti is located in Mayer, Arizona.
