Wiktionary is a sister project to Wikipedia to create a free wikiwiki dictionary in every language. Following through with Daniel Alston's idea, it was set up on
December 12, 2002. On March 29, 2004 the first two multilingual
Wiktionaries have been developed in French and Polish . Other languages are being developed. It was on a temporary URL until
May 1, 2004 when it switched to a full URL.
Wiktionary currently has more than 45,000 entries. Around ten new links were created in a single day (May 1).
Unlike many dictionaries, which are monolingual or bilingual, Wiktionary is a multilingual and international dictionary,
meaning that it tries to cover every word from all known languages.
