Westmoreland County is a county located in the Northern Neck of the State of
Virginia. As of 2000, the population is
16,718. Its county seat is Montross6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the
county has a total area of 654 km˛ (253 mi˛). 594 km˛ (229 mi˛) of it is land and 61 km˛ (23 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 9.29%
water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,718 people, 6,846
households, and 4,689 families residing in the county. The population density is 28/km˛ (73/mi˛). There are 9,286 housing units at an average density of 16/km˛
(40/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 65.41% White,
30.89% Black or African American, 0.28% Native
American, 0.36% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.75% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. 3.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,846 households out of which 25.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.70% are married couples
living together, 13.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% are non-families. 26.90% of all households
are made up of individuals and 13.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is
2.43 and the average family size is 2.91.
In the county, the population is spread out with 23.00% under the age of 18, 6.30% from 18 to 24, 23.90% from 25 to 44, 27.80%
from 45 to 64, and 19.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 92.30
males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $35,797, and the median income for a family is $41,357. Males have a median
income of $31,333 versus $22,221 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,473. 14.70% of the population and
11.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.10% are under the age of 18 and
12.50% are 65 or older.
