Westmoreland County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 369,993. Its county seat is Greensburg6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,684 km˛ (1,036 mi˛). 2,656 km˛ (1,025 mi˛) of it is land and 28 km˛ (11 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.05% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 369,993 people, 149,813 households, and 104,569 families residing in the county. The population density is 139/km˛ (361/mi˛). There are 161,058 housing units at an average density of 61/km˛ (157/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 96.58% White, 2.01% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 0.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 149,813 households out of which 28.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% are married couples living together, 9.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.20% are non-families. 26.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.00% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 18.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 93.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.70 males.
