West Virginia University is an institute of higher learning based in Morgantown, West Virginia, with off-site campuses in
Parkersburg, Montgomery, Keyser and Charleston, West Virginia. WVU was founded in 1867 as a
land-grant university with the help of the Morrill Act, and was originally called the "Agricultural College of West Virginia."
The university gained its current name in 1868. The Morgantown campus has a Personal rapid transit system to link its disjointed campus.
Enrollment for Fall semester of 2002 was 23,492.
25 Rhodes Scholars have been chosen fron WVU, including
current WVU president David Hardesty. There are only 6 other public universities with more.
WVU students staged a riot against the National Guard in the spring
of 1970, shortly after the shootings at Kent
State.
The school's sports teams are called the Mountaineers and compete in the Big East Conference, a member of the NCAA's Division I.
