West Lancashire is a local government
district in Lancashire, England. Its council is based in Ormskirk.
Other towns in the district include Skelmersdale, Burscough and Banks.
In plans proposed by the Boundary
Committee for reorganisation of local government into unitary authorities in Lancashire if North West England votes to have
an elected regional assembly; the
district would possibly be split into two, with the western part going with Sefton and
the eastern part going to Wigan.
In the original plan this controversially included splitting the town of Ormskirk itself. These have since been changed by the
Office of the Deputy Prime
Minister, and Ormskirk is entirely included in the proposed Sefton and West
Lancashire authority.
