Walker County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 61,053. The county's county seat is La Fayette, Georgia6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,158 km˛ (447 mi˛). 1,157 km˛ (447 mi˛) of it is land and 1 km˛ (0 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.10% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 61,053 people, 23,605 households, and 17,467 families residing in the county. The population density is 53/km˛ (137/mi˛). There are 25,577 housing units at an average density of 22/km˛ (57/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 94.43% White, 3.78% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 23,605 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 12.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.00% are non-families. 22.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,406, and the median income for a family is $39,034. Males have a median income of $29,448 versus $21,583 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,867. 12.50% of the population and 10.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.10% are under the age of 18 and 11.70% are 65 or older.
