Volusia County is a county located in the U.S. State of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 443,343. Its county seat is De Land6.

History

Volusia County was created in 1854. It was named for a settlement on the St. Johns River. The origin of the word remains obscure.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,710 km˛ (1,432 mi˛). 2,857 km˛ (1,103 mi˛) of it is land and 853 km˛ (329 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 22.98% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 443,343 people, 184,723 households, and 120,069 families residing in the county. The population density is 155/km˛ (402/mi˛). There are 211,938 housing units at an average density of 74/km˛ (192/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 86.11% White, 9.29% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 1.00% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.82% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 6.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 184,723 households out of which 24.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.40% are married couples living together, 10.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.00% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.82.

In the county the population is spread out with 20.30% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 25.30% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 22.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,219, and the median income for a family is $41,767. Males have a median income of $30,573 versus $22,471 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,664. 11.60% of the population and 7.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.30% are under the age of 18 and 7.10% are 65 or older.
