A utility cooperative is a type of Cooperative that is tasked
with the delivery of a public utility such as electricity or telecommunications to its members.
Many such cooperatives exist in the rural United States, often
providing superior service at lower rates compared to investor-owned public utilities in urban areas. For example, Souris River
Telephone of Minot, North Dakota provides 1Mbps
down/384kbps up ADSL service for $29.95 (2004)
compared to $50 for slower service from Baby Bells.
