The U.S. Western states are all those in the continental United States that lie west of the first tier west of Mississippi River, i.e. all the
states north and west of Texas: Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada,
Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and California. Hawaii and Alaska are special cases and are generally not included. Western states at least half of the land area of the
United States.
