His majesty Preach Reach Brhat Pada Samdach Brhat Naradhama Suramarta or Norodom Suramarit
was king of Cambodia from 1955 until his
death in 1960, and the father of Cambodia's current king, Norodom Sihanouk. Suramarit was born on the March 6,
1896 in Phnom Penh.
Norodom Sihanouk was both Suramarit's predecessor and successor on the throne. Suramarit was the brother of King Sisowath Monivong. Upon the
latter's death in 1941, Sihanouk, Suramarit's son, was selected as the new king. In
1955, Sihanouk abdicated in favor of his father. Following Suramarit's death in 1960, Norodom Sihanouk again became head of state (although he did not formally regain the title of
king until later).
King Norodom Suramarit was married to Sisowath Kosawak.
