Monsignor

Monsignor is the name of an ecclesiastical title of honor bestowed on some priests by the Roman Catholic Church. The title gives no extra sacramental powers.

Though there were more degrees in former times, there are now three ranks of monsignor (note that a priest being named a bishop may have held any, all, or none of them as they are not required steps of promotion). Bishops and archbishops may in some contexts themselves be called "monsignor". The ranks particular to monsignors are:

  • Prothonotary Apostolic (the highest and least common form)
  • Prelate of Honor (formerly "Domestic Prelate")
  • Chaplain to His Holiness (formerly "Papal Chamberlain")
