Markowa is a Polish village near Lancut. During WW2 many families hid their Jewish neighbours to help them
survive Holocaust. Now it is estimated that at least 17 Jews survived the war in
Markowa.
7 members of Weltz family were hidden in a barn of Dorota and Antoni Szylar. Jakub Einhorn were hidden by Jan and Weronika
Przybylak schronil sie Jakub Lorbenfeld family were hidden by Michal Bar.
2 girls from Reisenbach family were initially hidden by Stanislaw Kielar, before joining the rest of 5 members family in the
house of Julia and Józef Bar.
Tragedy
March 24, 1944 the patrol of German police
came to the house of Wiktoria and Józef Ulm, where they found 8 Jews: Szall and Goldman families. At first Germans executed all
Jews. Then they shot down pregnant Wiktoria and her husband. When 6 children begun to scream at the scene of dead bodies of their
parents, Jozef Kokott, German policeman (Volksdeutsche from Sudetenland) killed them one after another.
